Walker County

Walker Countyis one of the most historic counties in Texas.  Best known as the home of General Sam Houston, hero of the Texas Revolution and the leading political figure in earlyTexas, Walker Countyis brimming with history aside from General Houston.  Walker County?s principal city Huntsville founded in 1835 was the leading cultural center of Texasprior to the Civil War.  Leaders in law, education and business flocked to Huntsville and seeded other parts of Texasas it developed in the 19^th and 20^th Centuries. Huntsville has a population of 35,078.  Located in town are two of Sam Houston?s homes, a museum, and a 66 foot statue which is the tallest statue of an American hero in the world.

 

Sam Houston Normal Institute, now known as Sam Houston State University, was founded in 1879 on the site of the former Austin College.  It preceded both the University of Texasand Texas A & M.  Sam Houston is one of the fastest growing colleges with a student population of 17,214.  SHSU offers 79 bachelor?s programs, 54 master?s programs and five doctoral programs, including recognized programs in Business, Fine Arts, Education, Mathematics and Criminal Justice. 

 

Huntsville is the headquarters for Texas Department of Criminal Justice (the only state agency with headquarters outside of Austin.) The Texas Department of Criminal Justice offers employment opportunities in many professional and technical areas.
